Dan Coffey was on top of the world just a few short months ago. He was holding well attended Town Hall meetings and even started a Blog to reach out to his constituents. He soon became tired of his blogging duties.
He believed that he had found an issue that he could get behind and enjoy the love and admiration of all of the citizens of New Albany.
WE MUST STOP THEM PEOPLE FROM RAISING OUR SEWER RATES
How quickly he has fallen!
While keeping the rates (artificially) low is a noble deed, the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few, (or the one). The majority on the council have realized this and voted to raise the rates to a level that will allow for the Sewer Department to continue making the improvements in needs so that we can correct some of the problems that have plagued this city for decades.
Our man Dan was also defeated in a couple of major moves that he opposed the hiring of a full time lawyer for the city council and also a grant writer.
These major progressive (not a dirty word) plans have diminished his political prowess in my eyes, rendering him politically impotent.

Time to make the donuts...
Sorry It has been so long since my last post but I have been very busy. Just last week there was a Green Acres Marathon on Nick at Night and I couldn't miss it (I just love that Arnold the PIG)
I would love to tell you what it is that Mr. Coffey has been working on but no one is for sure. He just continues to fight against "economic development" and continues to look for solutions that will keep our city in the stone age for the next few years.
There are meetings all this week to come up with viable solutions to our sewer woes. Hopefully smarter minds will prevail.
FYI: Mr. Coffey, no current members of the VFW actually gave their lives for our country.

"The Corner" Stops Selective Censoring
The first few days Coffey's foray into the world of blogging were a bit stressful for the councilman. Having to check back repeatedly to make sure that one of his "enemies" hadn't tried to make a clear and concise point that disagreed with his diatribe took its toll. Without warning the blog has eliminated the ability to comment. I guess the happy exchange of information and fresh ideas was too hard of a concept to comprehend.

Tribune takes Coffey to task yet again
The Wednesday edition of The Tribune includes a "cheer" for the 1st district councilman for actually trying to join the debate:
Cheers:
to New Albany City Councilman Dan Coffey for submitting a constructive response for the community to consider on this Opinions page (published March 2, 2010). It did not blatantly attack his opposition. Instead it offered specific suggestions for dealing with a proposed sewer rate hike. I’m glad to see the longest-sitting elected city leader engage in logical public discussion. — Tribune publisher Steve Kozarovich
There was little time to celebrate as it was quickly turned into a Jeer:
JEERS ... to New Albany City Councilman Dan Coffey for proving to voters again why he shouldn’t be in a position of authority. His guest column submitted to The Tribune was an attempt at rational public discussion but here are a couple concerns it raised. • When The Tribune asked for the name of the study he refers to in his submission, he was unable to do so. His response was that it was handed out at a meeting by a resident in attendance, and that it was online somewhere but unable to tell us where. • The submission originally included a paragraph that included more than one error referencing payment amounts and dates. • The former council president suggests using economic development tax money to offset the sewer increase. This is against state statutes. Everyone makes mistakes and it pains me to point out that there is a difference between 35 percent and 36 percent but the items above illustrate the long-term problem that councilman Coffey does not check his facts when addressing the community. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but let’s base those opinions on facts, especially if you are an elected leader. — Tribune publisher Steve Kozarovich ...

The trouble with Blogging
The world of blogging should be a free exchange of ideas, but not in "The Corner". Apparently Coffey dismisses comments that he disagrees with or oppose his views. I realize it's his blog and his rules but refusing to listen to others and erasing messages of people with different ideas is no way for someone who claims to be a leader to act.
(The Watchdog was also blocked from following Mr. Coffey's blog)
“A good listener tries to understand what the other person is saying. In the end he may disagree sharply, but because he disagrees, he wants to know exactly what it is he is disagreeing with.”--Kenneth A. Wells

Coffey in Tribune
Dan Coffey's column appears in the Tuesday edition of the Tribune where he sites a survey which list New Albany as the highest sewer rate of any second class city. I am sure this was a very scientific study (ie. a member of the potty police googled it.)
He forgets that Jeffersonville has joined New Albany as a second class city and just recently passed a 200% rate increase and has a higher rate than us.
Of course I wouldn't want facts to get in the way of his story tellin'
